This is based on the opening stanza of an old song I wrote. That opening line is performed here by Hans Van Daele’s unaccompanied cello. To me it’s a bit of an earworm, and writing counterpoint and variations for it was interesting, also because of its time signature of 5/4. It’s not a real fugue, but there are a lot of fugal bits in it, hence the name. With thanks to Paul Mann for editing my manuscript.
